The Fisheries Department is considering construction of finger jetties at the Kasimedu fishing harbour here to create more space for berthing mechanised boats.
Members of various mechanised boat owners associations highlighted the need for such jetties during the visit of Fisheries Minister K.A. Jayapaul to the fishing harbour on Tuesday. The Minister, who was inspecting the ongoing improvement works there, told the boat owners that finger jetties would be built in the second phase of the fishing harbour modernisation project.
Officials of the department added that there were also plans to construct a wharf for fibre reinforced plastic boats. A common marketing facility would be built for the fishermen. A detailed project report would soon be prepared .
In the first phase, the trawler wharf, which can berth nearly 500 mechanised boats, is being strengthened. The modernisation project, being undertaken at a cost of around Rs.16 crore, also aims at providing toilet blocks, laying roads and construction of compound wall and auction hall.
The project would be completed in a year, the officials said.
