Finding space for welfare projects is becoming all the more challenging for the Greater Chennai Corporation.
Owing to insufficient space in the city, the Corporation plans to use spaces in existing civic facilities for projects such as Amma canteens. The civic body has floated tender for constructing a new Amma canteen beneath the flyover near the Velachery railway station.
Previously, the civic body has used space in gymnasiums, schools and Corporation offices to construct Amma canteens. Some of the 300 canteens have been commissioned in existing civic facilities.
Identifying space for other welfare schemes such as Amma drinking water supply outlets have been delayed because of inadequate space in many of the 200 wards of the Corporation.
Of the 100 places proposed for the Amma drinking water scheme, only 18 have been secured and work has been commissioned.
About 40 more locations had been identified, say sources, adding that the civic body was not able to find space for the remaining outlets.
Similarly, space for 593 new Amma canteens has not yet been found. The new canteens may have to share space with other civic facilities, said an official.
