The Madras High Court has directed the government to file a status report on the arrest of social activist K.R.Ramaswamy alias ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy at Vepery here on March 12.

Justice T.S.Sivagnanam has posted the matter for further hearing on April 8.

In a petition, R. Fatima of Kumbakonam said with a view to wreaking vengeance on Mr. Ramaswamy (82), the police went to his house and arrested him at 4 a.m. without following any rules framed by the Supreme Court for arresting a person. Mr. Ramaswamy was protected by armed police. There was no necessity to arrest him at that time. He was pushed on the steps. His relatives were not informed about the arrest till he was remanded to custody.

The petitioner said that she sent representations to the authorities to take necessary action against the police officials concerned. But till date, no action had been taken.
