To celebrate its customers’ loyalty Aavin has announced a discount on butter and ghee prices for milk card-holders during the festive season.

Starting Sunday, a discount of Rs. 3 will be offered on purchase of half a kilo of butter, Rs. 3 on half a litre of ghee and Rs. 5 for a litre of ghee. To avail of the discount, card-holders will have to produce their cards at any of Aavin’s 16 zonal offices.

Card-holding households in and around the city, consume close to 7 lakh litres of Aavin milk daily. Aavin, which is the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation, supplies around 10.9 lakh litres of milk every day to the city. In September, 100 tonnes of Aavin ghee and 65 tonnes of its butter were sold in the city. These figures are double last year’s sales during the same period.

Aavin ghee is priced at Rs. 290 per kilo and half a kilo of butter is sold at Rs. 130. A market leader on the other hand, sells a kilo of ghee at Rs. 325 and half a kilo of butter at Rs. 147.

Consumers recall that there used to be a perennial shortage of ghee and butter and they used to stand in queues to get the products, after making bookings on the previous day.

However, with an increase in milk production, milk-based products are available in abundance. This month, milk production is at 26 lakh litres per day on an average, as against last year’s 23.12 lakh litres per day.

Dairy development minister V. Moorthi on Friday, inaugurated two more Aavin parlours in M.R. Nagar and Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, bringing the number of parlours in the city to 70.
