FBR operations from September

The country’s first fast breeder reactor, which is coming up in the nuclear complex at Kalpakkam in Kancheepuram district, is likely to commence generating power from September this year.

“We are hopeful of generating 30 per cent of power and connect it to the southern grid by September this year. The full capacity of the unit is expected to be generated by September next year,” P. Chellapandi, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI) said. Designed by Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research , the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor would use a mix of plutonium and uranium oxide as fuel and is aimed at generating 500 MW of power. — Special Correspondent
