A 16-year-old student of class XI died on Thursday after he slipped and fell off an overcrowded Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus at Santhoshapuram near Tambaram.
The student, who is said to have travelled on the footboard, sustained head injury. Bharat Kumar was going to his school in East Tambaram when the accident took place, traffic police said.
A resident of Nehru Street, Medavakkam, Bharat Kumar is the eldest among three children of Sudha, working as domestic help at the Primary Health Centre in Medavakkam. His father, Bhaskaran, is no more.
A student of the commerce stream at Jaigopal Garodia National Higher Secondary School in East Tambaram, Bharat Kumar was travelling on M 21 bus between Velachery and East Tambaram. The bus was overcrowded and some other students were travelling on the footboard with Bharat Kumar.
The youth was taken to a private clinic in East Tambaram, where he died.
His younger brother, Sharat Kumar, a class IX student of the same school, was also travelling in the bus. However, he was unaware of the accident and went to attend classes.
A spokesperson of the school said that several hundred students came from far off places that were not well served by services of the MTC.
As there were several private, government and aided schools in East Tambaram, the government could consider operating additional services during school hours, he said.
Due to inadequate services and absence of transport provided by the schools, many students are forced to travel on footboard.
