Friends and relatives of a 29-year-old man who succumbed to injuries suffered allegedly due to assaults by the police protested on Thursday outside Government Royapettah Hospital. They refused to accept the body and demanded action against the policemen.

Thangakumar, a vegetable vendor, was arrested on Sunday by the Taramani police on charges including public nuisance and preventing an officer from performing his duty. He was lodged in Puzhal prison where he complained of illness on Wednesday morning. He died enroute to a city hospital.

A protest was also held near Tidel Park in Taramani. In both locations, the protestors dispersed after senior police officers assured them of action.

In a statement, Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peravai president S. Vellaiyan also demanded action against the erring police personnel.

Police commissioner S. George issued transfer orders to sub-inspector Mohanram and head constable Anwar, who allegedly assaulted the man.

A magisterial enquiry has been ordered into the death and a post-mortem is likely to be done on Friday.
