On World Heart Day, the family of a 12-year-old boy who was declared brain dead at the Christian Medical College (CMC) decided to donate his heart to give someone a new lease of life.

According to hospital authorities, the boy, S. Vidhyasaran, a resident of Akkachipatti, Gandarvakkottai in Pudukottai district, was injured after the car he was travelling in met with an accident at Chittoor on September 27.

He was admitted to CMC, Vellore, but was declared brain dead at 11.30 p.m. on September 28 after he failed to respond to treatment.

As his family came forward to donate his organs, doctors harvested his heart, liver, kidneys, lungs and eyes on Friday. While his heart and lungs were allocated to Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai, the liver and eyes were allotted to CMC. The kidneys were allocated to SIMS Hospital and MIOT Hospital in Chennai.

The heart is being taken to Chennai by road. A green corridor will be created for transporting the organ by 4 p.m., an official said.
