Three men posing as election officers reportedly robbed two employees of a steel agency of over Rs. 30 lakh on Wednesday.

According to police sources, Kasiram (32) and Govindaraj (39), employees of a city-based firm, were returning to their office from Parry’s with a sum of Rs. 30.40 lakh collected from dealers when a man clad in khaki trousers, claiming to be an election officer, intercepted them at Sembudoss Street.

He inspected the vehicle and noticing the cash, demanded supporting documents. As the two men couldn’t produce any documents, the suspect called his two accomplices by phone. The trio took the two men to the parking lot opposite the Secretariat and pushed them into their vehicle.

They then drove them to a spot in Besant Nagar and confiscated the cash, their wallets, mobile phones and other belongings.

The culprits fled the scene with the cash and other items after sending the victims to buy beverages from a shop nearby, sources added. The two men informed their manager about the theft and lodged a compliant with Esplanade police on Thursday. A probe is on.
