With Deepavali round the corner, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has deployed additional strength at railway stations and in trains.

Armed guards will be provided to passengers carrying valuables. Women constables in plainclothes have been deployed in EMUs and armed constables in express trains.

“Passengers carrying valuables are requested to inform us. Only then, can we deploy armed guards who will patrol the compartment and monitor the person’s valuables closely,” a GRP officer said.

Officers said that transporting firecrackers and other combustible material is an offence that will attract severe punishment and fine. Fifteen special parties comprising a sub-inspector and five police constables have been formed to be deployed in all trains to guard against transporting firecrackers.

Checking of trains, baggages and parcels has been intensified at all important railway stations like Chennai Central, Egmore, Madurai, Tiruchi and Coimbatore. A helpline — 9962500500 — is functioning round the clock.
