Residents of merged areas of the city will soon be provided with piped water supply.
The State government has sanctioned Rs. 452.77 crore for water supply to nine areas including Nolambur, Karambakkam, Sholinganallur, Ramapuram, Injambakkam and Manapakkam, and for implementing sewerage schemes in four areas — Kathivakkam, Sholinganallur, Karapakkam and Ramapuram — under the Chennai Mega City Development Mission.
Residents of Sholinganallur said the water supply scheme must be implemented soon as many of them depended on street water supply and private tankers.
Work on laying water supply network in Injambakkam, Sholinganallur and Karapakkam, at a cost of Rs. 58 crore, will begin soon.
At present, residents of Injambakkam are supplied with 20 litres per capita per day through extraction of groundwater from borewells.
Work on the water supply system, which will provide nearly 40 lakh litres, will be completed in two years.
Nearly 57,100 residents in south Chennai will benefit from the piped water supply system, said a press release from Metrowater.
Meeting demand in city
Meanwhile, to address the shortage of water in the city region, Metrowater is tapping nearly 100 million litres a day of groundwater from well fields and Neyveli aquifers.
Nearly 3,700 tanker lorry trips are being operated every day using lorries mobilised from Namakkal and Erode.
The waiting period for tanker supply has decreased in 11 zones, said a Metrowater official.
Street supply is provided through more than 1,000 lorry loads wherever there are narrow streets.
