“Make in India should focus not only on bringing industries from outside to set up production units in India, but also on promoting Indian industry,” was the winning argument at the Elihu Yale Inter College Debate held on Wednesday.
The argument, made by Irene Lal Mechery from Women’s Christian College, won her the best speaker award at the debate organised by the Indo American Association.
“I had only a day to prepare, but it is something that I feel strongly about, so I was able to build my argument,” she said. The debate featured teams from 14 colleges arguing for and against the topic ‘Make In India – An economically winning proposition for India?’
The first prize went to Irene and her teammate Sneha Tarway. The first-runners-up were Monica Banerjee and Anjul Hans from Great Lakes Institute of Management and the second-runners-up were Anupama Nair and Shaleena Eliza Finny from Hindustan University.
“The competition provides a platform for students to discuss issues relating to India and the world,” P. Murari, one of the organisers of the debate, said.
The Elihu Yale debate is named after the former governor of Fort St. George who established the Mayor’s Court in Chennai.
The Indo American Association, which conducted the debate, was established in 1950 and has been encouraging Indian scholarship and literature, a release said.
