World Environment Day has provided the Kasturbanagar Residents Association (KRA) with one more opportunity to “inform, initiate and implement” a sustainable solid waste management programme at the individual and community level.

Taking their initiative a notch higher, the Association is organising Azhagiya Adyar, a waste management mela on June 9 at their community hall in Adyar.

A host of activities, including competitions, talks and workshops on waste management solutions, will be organised at the mela.

The waste-to-wealth mela was conceptualised by a team of residents who follow sustainable practices at home.

“We segregate out kitchen waste at source, compost all organic waste on our premises and recycle all recyclables. These are some simple yet effective methods we have adopted to ensure that the amount of waste going out of our neighbourhood is reduced considerably. We hope this mela will serve as a platform for residents across Chennai to adopt and take small steps towards such green practices,” says Kannan V.C., a member of the association.

The activity menu

There is an extensive line-up of activities based on themes related to environment waste management.

For children, there are painting competitions, quiz competitions and best-out-of-waste workshops. A host of non-government organisations and association groups, including Namma Ooru Foundation, Solid Waste Management Forum, Reciprocity Foundation, will share their success stories through talks, demonstrations and presentations.

“On the occasion, we will inaugurate an organic farming and community garden. There will be sales of eco-friendly products and composting kits at the mela,” says Kannan.
