‘Excuse me, I am the chief guest’

If you thought jokes based on maths, father-son, doctor-patient, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationships have faded into the background, you might want to drop by at the Anna Nagar Humour Club. Every second Sunday of the month, around 60 members of the club huddle at Shri Krishnaswami Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Anna Nagar West, to enjoy some of these good old jokes.

This 20-year-old club, founded by Pakkirisamy, seems to have the ability to have a hearty laugh at itself, when things go wrong. According to members, in the initial years, there were many goof-ups.

“Once, we invited a chief guest for a meeting. Strangely, none of the members knew him by sight. An hour before the event, we gave him a reminder call. It was 4 p.m. already and there was no sign of the chief guest’s arrival, though he assured us of his presence. We nevertheless decided to start the programme. One of the members announced ‘the chief guest is on the way’. A second later, a gentleman, who was seated on the front row all the while, stood up and said, ‘I am your chief guest. I have been waiting for your invitation to the dais’,” recalls P. Gopalakrishna Rao, one of the organisers of Anna Nagar Humour Club.

With no subscription as well as entry fee, the club attracts people from places as far away as Padi and Tambaram. With the presence of humorists such as Delhi Ganesh and Saraswati aka Sachu, the numbers go up to 400.

The audience is welcome to share their jokes, says its organiser.
