The judicial probe into the police firing at Paramakudi should not come in the way of enhancement of compensation given to the victims, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said on Thursday.
In a statement here, he referred to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's remark that it was not possible to order any action against the police or raise the compensation amount as a judicial inquiry by a retired high court judge had already been ordered and said, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” Mr. Karunanidhi recalled that in February 1998, he had announced compensation to the victims of the Coimbatore serial bomb blasts amounting to Rs.1.50 crore.
Later, a judicial inquiry was constituted to probe the incidents. As the inquiry report was not expected for three months, he had ordered payment of interim compensation amounting to Rs.5 crore to those who had suffered losses due to destruction of property. Further, he had ordered the transfer of the Coimbatore Police Commissioner.
