A second year engineering student allegedly committed suicide by suffocating himself to death in his hostel at Semmancheri here on Tuesday.

According to police sources, G. William Gary (19) of Gomathimuhupuam near Sankarankoil joined second year Electronics and Communication Engineering (lateral entry) in a private engineering college at Semmancheri on Monday.

After college hours on Tuesday, he was in the hostel room while his roommates went out to meet some friends.

When they came back, the bathroom door was locked from inside.

When there was no response for long, they forced open the door and found William lying unconscious. He had a polythene cover covering his head and tied around the neck with a lace.

He was declared dead when taken to a private hospital nearby.

Investigations

“It appears to be a case of suicide. The student suffocated himself to death using the polythene cover. We are investigating the circumstances that led to his death,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Thoraippakkam) K.N. Murali said.

The Semmancheri police have registered a case.
