Engineering counselling for general category from today

July 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - CHENNAI:

Counselling for candidates under general category for admission to engineering courses begins on Wednesday and will continue till the end of the month.

On each day, eight sessions will be held in which about 6,400 candidates are expected to take part. Anywhere between 500 and 800 candidates will be accommodated in each session lasting around 90 minutes.

This is because there will be at least 1,000 candidates for each mark, officials said.

Candidates should arrive two hours in advance to complete the formalities before entering the counselling hall.

The university has six display halls with a seating capacity of 1,000 persons at a time.

The counselling halls will have six cameras and candidates manning the terminals will be shuffled after each session of 50 students. Each student will get three to four minutes to make his/ her choice.

An issue of concern for the university officials is the presence of unauthorised persons on the campus.

Though the university authorities have cautioned the candidates about touts and taken police’s help to weed them out, officials say it required candidates’ support too.“No one is permitted to distribute flyers or pamphlets inside the campus. There will be policemen in uniform and a similar number in plainclothes but we can do nothing if candidates’ family members do not cooperate.

Often we would spot loiterers but the parent would say the person is known to them.

After the counselling process, they would come to us and say they were duped into choosing an unsuitable college,” said Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions secretary Rhymend V. Uthariaraj.
