Engineer falls from crane, dies

A junior engineer of the Chennai Port Trust (CPT) died at the port on Thursday after he slipped from a 20-feet-high crane while he was inspecting routine maintenance,

Police said that S. Venketasan (54), a junior engineer of the electrical department of the CPT, was overseeing the replacement of oil by two subordinate staff members in the crane, which was attached to a concrete platform.

“The overhauling of the crane was done once in two months and he fell on the concrete platform to which the crane was fixed,” said a police officer.

The incident occured around 10.45 a.m. and co-workers rushed Venketasan to the Stanley Government Hospital where doctors declared that he was ‘brought dead’. A resident of Virugambakkam, Venketasan is survived by his wife and two children.

A case has been filed at the Harbour police station.
