Madan (23), a layout artist in Anandha Vikatan group, was pronounced brain dead after he met with an accident at Karappakam on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) on Sunday evening. Five of his vital organs have been donated by his parents.

Madhan is the son of K. Dakshinamurthy a resident of Madurantakam. After finishing his degree he came to Chennai two years ago and joined Nanaya Vikatan, a business magazine that is part of Anandha Vikatan group. He was staying in Tiruvanmiyur.

On Sunday evening, he was riding pillion, with his cousin Vasu riding a bike. At Karapakkam on OMR, they spotted a share autorickshaw in front of them moving to the right and they tried to overtake it from the left. But the autorickshaw swerved and hit the bike’s handlebar.

Vasu immediately applied the disc brakes causing both of them to fall off the vehicle. Madan sustained head injuries and was rushed to a private hospital, where the doctors diagnosed a blood clot in the brain .

His relatives took him to two other hospitals, where the doctors gave the same opinion. By then Madan’s condition had become critical and doctors declared him brain dead. They counselled the parents who agreed to donate their son’s organs. “Madan was a down-to-earth person who was always ready to help others. He always used to say we should help others and used to encourage us to donate our organs,” said Prasanna, a colleague of Madan.

Madan’s brother Senthil said the liver, lungs, eyes, kidney and heart were donated. His liver, lung and one kidney were transplanted to patients waitlisted with Global Hospital. The heart valves were sent to Madras Medical Mission, while one kidney was sent to a patient admitted at Chennai Kaliappa Hospital. The corneas were harvested and sent to Lions Eye Bank.

The police have registered a case and are investigating. A traffic police officer said Madhan and his cousin had been unable to supply an identification of the autorickshaw.
