Jerusalem College of Engineering organised a seminar on Freedom in Internet and Present IT Rules recently. Debesh Das, Chairman, Division III, Former Minister of IT, Computer Society of India, Government of West Bengal; C. Satish Babu, President, Computer Society of India and Director of International Centre for Free and Open Source Software, Government of Kerala; and Siddharth Varadarajan, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu, were the guests of honour.

Over 250 participants from the CSI Student’s Chapter of Jerusalem College of Engineering, Computer Society of India, Chennai Chapter and Division III, IEEE Computer Society, Madras Chapter, IEEE Professional Communication Society, Madras Chapter, Free Software Foundation Tamil Nadu, and the MBA and MCA students of Jerusalem College of Engineering attended the seminar.

Mr. Satish Babu delivered a speech on “The Boon and Bane of Social Networking,” “The Pros and Cons of Forming Communities in Social Networks” and “Open Source Software.”

Mr. Siddharth Varadarajan detailed about the present IT rules focusing on cyber crime and the misuse of freedom in urban society. He explained the Information Technology Act which focuses on data privacy. He elaborated on the security practices and procedures designed to protect information from unauthorised access, damage, use, modification, disclosure or impairment. He spoke on cyber law and emphasised on the need for reasonable security practices and standards.
