An identity card to help reach the friends and family of a road accident victim was launched here on Wednesday.

S. Suresh, director of the Accident Research Centre, an NGO, said that under the Project ICE (In Case of Emergency) each registered road user would be issued an ID card with a unique identity number.

Anyone can register by filling an application form that accommodates 10 phone numbers. The numbers will be linked to the unique ID in Project ICE's database.

The emergency helpline number — 9095599955 — would also be displayed prominently on the card.

According to Mr.Suresh, in case the ID card holder meets with an accident, it would help identify the person.

When he/she is injured in a road accident, the public or authorities concerned need to call us and give the identity number on the card. We will recover the details about the person from our database and inform the family and medical network to help the victim immediately, he said.

Mr.Suresh pointed out that when a person meets with an accident, the need of the hour is to take decisions fast.

“But it takes 6 to 10 hours for the close family members to reach the hospital because of the time involved in obtaining the phone numbers and informing them. We want to cut it short to just 10 minutes,” he added.
