Elephant death: Probe sought

June 25, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:09 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Four days after the death of Maharaj, the elephant, several activists assembled on Marina Beach on Friday evening, demanding justice for the dead animal.

“The elephant died in the worst manner, we want a judicial probe into the matter,” said Arun Prasanna G., founder, People For Cattle in India (PFCII), who, along with 20 other activists, raised slogans demanding justice.

“The animal had sustained severe fractures on its skull while in the enclosure. The officials should have been more careful while handling Maharaj,” he said.

The organisation said they had filed a public interest litigation seeking its release, but by the time the matter came up for hearing, Maharaj was dead. The activists held a signature campaign and will send representations to the Chief Minister, Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, Chief Wildlife Warden and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.

“All we want is justice, and we will fight for it,” said Mr. Arun.

Television actor Abhishek also participated in the demonstration.
