Tension prevailed in Korukkupet on Friday as a large number of people gathered to protest against the negligence of authorities due to which an auto driver was electrocuted.

When Sivalingam, 42, got down from his auto and stepped on stagnant rain water to restart his vehicle, he was electrocuted due to a leak from a nearby junction box. He was living in Meenambal Nagar. On Friday morning, he was returning home after dropping his son Vilvendhan, studying in class VIII, in a nearby school.

Due to the downpour, the roads were inundated with rainwater and his auto was struck in the middle of stagnant water on Sathiamurthy Street. He got down to restart the auto when he was electrocuted. The locals immediately got the Tangedco to disconnect power supply to the entire area. On information, police personnel from R.K Nagar reached the spot and tried to remove the body of the deceased.

Arguments with police

But the crowd laid siege to the police jeep and had heated arguments with the personnel. They demanded action initiated against the Tangedco officials responsible for negligence besides disbursement of compensation to the victim’s family.

Tempers ran high as the public refused to budge and continued to block the police personnel from removing the body from the spot. Police and Tangedco officials held talks with the agitating public for more than two hours. Following an assurance from the officials, the public dispersed.
