Section writers of the elections department of Chennai held a demonstration on Tuesday demanding regularisation of their jobs.

The protesters alleged the district election office failed to take the efforts to regularise 90 section writers who were instrumental in preparation of electoral photo identity cards and rolls from 2006-2007. The regularisation of services would help section writers get a decent pay. They earn Rs. 180 per day.

The chief electoral officer has sent a proposal on regularisation of section writers by absorbing them into government service. The district election officer/commissioner of Chennai and collectors of Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram engaged section writers in 2006-2007 on daily wages.

The number of sanctioned posts is 90 in Chennai, 41 in Kancheepuram and 40 in Tiruvallur. The section writers said they played a key role in the conduct of elections to the Lok Sabha in 2009 and the Assembly in 2011.
