Director Bharathiraja has been elected as the president of Tamil Nadu Film Directors' Association for which the election was held on Sunday. Bharathiraja won by a margin of 1,003 votes against assistant director S.Murali. A total of 1,279 votes were polled. The results for select posts were announced on Monday.

Directors Cheran and Samudrakani were chosen unopposed as vice-presidents and S.P.Jananathan has been elected as treasurer without opposition. Director Ameer was chosen as general secretary by winning 901 votes.

Prabhu Solomon, S.S.Stanley, Thambidurai and Velmurugan were elected joint secretaries of the association.

Meanwhile, much more than the future plans of the association might be discussed at the first meeting of the new office-bearers to be convened on Tuesday, according to sources.

Bharathiraja said: “There is a small confusion. The plans of the association will be decided in the meeting. A decision will be taken on whether I would continue as the association president or not.” This is the second term for Bharathiraja as association president.

Ameer said he was joint secretary of the association during the last term. He contested for the post of general secretary representing United Directors Team this time. “We would address the problems of assistant and associate directors who play a major role in film making.”

While there is a fixed salary for technicians, assistant directors do not have a direct agreement with the film producers, he said. The office-bearers would hold office for three years. There are nearly 2,100 members in the association.
