August 05, 2016 02:33 am | Updated 02:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

Former TNCC president E.V.K.S. Elangovan appeared before the Principal District Judge here on Thursday in connection with a criminal defamation case moved by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Recording his presence, the court adjourned the case to September 14 for further hearing.

On May 18, the City Public Prosecutor M.L. Jegan filed the application on behalf of the Chief Minister before the Principal Sessions Court, Chennai. It was alleged that Mr. Elangovan, while being interviewed by a private television channel on April 30, made several allegations that the Governor of Tamil Nadu and the Chief Minister has obtained monetary benefits while making appointments to the posts of Vice-Chancellors to various State Universities.

“The State government is treating every opinion and the statements of the opposition party leaders as defamation, which is not acceptable,” he said briefing the media after the hearing.
