The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed an education consultant company here to pay a compensation of Rs.3 lakh for causing mental agony to a person of Perambur here and deficiency of service on its part.
The Commission Bench II, comprising A.K. Annamalai, Presiding Member Judicial and Vasugi Ramanan, Member, passed the order on a complaint from M.Sangeetha against Nission Educational Consultants Pvt.Ltd., Nungambakkam (opposite party.)
The complainant submitted that she got admission to the first year MBBS course at Rostov University, South Zone of Russia, for 2007-08, through the educational consultant, which promised various facilities available and separate hostel facilities.
She paid Rs.3,00,050 as tuition fees and Rs.1 lakh for admission fees towards visa and airfare, though they were included in the processing fee. When she went to the foreign country, the situation was contrary to the promises. The hostel was not within the college premises and it was in a dungeon-like condition. The complainant had been admitted to the course in Russian medium, instead of English medium as promised.
The Bench said it had been proved that the complainant was lured by attractive promises regarding medical admission in Russia. As the real situation abroad was contrary to the promises made, she was forced to return home. This was due to deficiency of service by the opposite party.
The Bench also directed the opposite party to refund Rs.2.13 lakh after deducting the expenses towards service charges.
It also ordered that Rs.3,000 be paid as costs to the complainant.
