DMDK leader Vijayakant has said that the Election Commission is functioning in an unbiased manner to ensure free and fair polls. Responding to DMK president M. Karunanidhi's claim that the EC was functioning in a partisan manner, Mr. Vijayakant, who addressed a series of meetings in Salem district on Tuesday, said though the EC action would irritate a few people, it could ultimately ensure a level playing field.

“The EC officials are unbiased and their action has prevented money flow to the electorate. This has prompted the DMK to accuse the Commission of supporting the AIADMK alliance,” he said. Mr. Vijayakant claimed that his rivals had planned to pump in Rs.2 crore to Rs.10 crore for each Assembly segment to “purchase” victory.

Accusing the DMK of having no principles, Mr. Vijayakant said that a few middle-level officers in the Police Department were hand-in- glove with some powerful DMK Ministers, especially in Tiruvannamalai and Madurai. “How can you conduct a fair election with such officials? The DMK has converted the Police Department into its private force.”

The alliance between the DMK and the PMK was an unprincipled one.“ No worthwhile development has taken place. Corruption has eaten into the rank and file,” he said.
