The Election Commission has got down to business for the Srirangam by-election with the authorities asking political parties to send by January 27 their lists of leaders for whom they wish to get exemption from the expenditure of candidates.
A press release issued by Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sandeep Saxena on Saturday stated that the benefit of exemption would be available “if and only if” the names of the leaders (maximum of 20 in the case of an unrecognised political party and 40 for a recognised political party) were communicated to the Commission and the CEO within seven days from Monday (January 19), date of notification for the by-election.
Apart from the travel expenses incurred by the leaders whose names had been communicated to the Commission and the CEO, all other expenses of the political parties relating to the campaign for the candidates would be required to be included in the account of election expenses of the candidates concerned. Also, travel by star campaigners for candidates of parties other than theirs would not be exempted, the release said.
