A total of 19 candidates, who contested in various Assembly constituencies across the State in May 2016, have been disqualified by the Election Commission for three years after they failed to lodge the accounts of elections expenses.

According to a notification issued by the EC, the candidates had contested from Ambasamudram, Bodinayakanur, Gobichettipalayam, Madurai North, Melur, Thirumangalam, Thiruparankundram, Udhagamandalam, Ulundurpet, Usilampatti, Vasudevanallur and Villupuram Assembly constituencies. It also said that the candidates have not furnished any reason or explanation for the said failure even after due notice.

The candidates have been disqualified for three years from becoming a Member of the Legislative Assembly or a Member of Parliament, as per Section 10A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
