Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) seized 4 kg of gold, including 2 kg of gold coins and gold biscuits, from the lockers of former Anna University Vice-Chancellor M. Rajaram and his family members in Chennai and Theni, a senior investigator said on Thursday.

He said the lockers were opened as part of the investigation into a corruption case registered against the former Vice-Chancellor and others. Besides various irregularities in the appointment of teaching faculty between 2013 and 2016, the agency was looking into allegations that Mr. Rajaram amassed wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Investigation revealed that at least 22 buses were registered in Puducherry in the name of the then Vice-Chancellor’s wife. The family had a prime property in Koyambedu for bus operations.

“He (the former Vice-Chancellor) is claiming that bus travels is his family business and the gold was given by his in-laws. It is true that his brother owns a popular travels in Theni. We have not got any record to substantiate the possession of gold coins and gold biscuits and the accounts for purchasing 22 buses during the check period,” the DVAC official added.
