The Central Crime Branch of the city police arrested a duo who allegedly cheated various persons of over Rs. 64 lakh. Police suspect over 100 persons were conned.

CCB officers said R.V. Narmadha, a resident of Mugalivakkam, had started a firm titled India Track Call Taxi with an office in Koyambedu. Her accomplice was a former cine dancer Bharat Kumar (24) of Broadway, who later joined as a manager.

“She attracted investors through advertisements announcing that her firm will pay a sum of Rs. 5,000 every month for 36 months to those depositing Rs. 1 lakh. For larger deposits, more was promised,” said S. Jeyakumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, CCB. With the large sums of money that were invested, the duo purchased nearly 100 vehicles for the firm

After August 2014, Narmadha and Kumar started evading their clients and stopped all payments. She went absconding when investors thronged her office in Koyambedu. Following a complaint, a CCB probe was initiated and Narmadha and Kumar were arrested on Monday. They were remanded to custody.
