Drunk man murders younger brother

Older brother Thangaraj picked up a knife and stabbed Ponnaiyan in the stomach, police said

An argument between two brothers over hailing an autorickshaw to go to the house of their uncle, who had passed away early on Friday, resulted in one stabbing the other to death.

J J Nagar police said the two men were inebriated at the time of the incident.

The victim, Ponnaiyan alias Kamal (32), a resident of Nakkeeran Salai in Mogappair East, was working in an export firm in Ambattur Industial Estate.

The suspect, Thangaraj alias Rajini (34), who is Ponnaiyan’s elder brother, is a cable TV sub-operator and resides in Padi Pudunagar.

Around 12.30 a.m. on Friday, the family received news of the brothers’ uncle, who resided in Pallavaram, passing away. Thangaraj came to Ponnaiyan’s house around 1 a.m. and the family then prepared to leave for Pallavaram.

“Thangaraj sent Ponnaiyan to hail an autorickshaw, but the latter returned after a while without having found a vehicle. The enraged older brother shouted at the younger one, and soon the men started exchanging blows. Suddenly, Thangaraj picked up a knife and stabbed Ponnaiyan in the stomach,” said an investigating officer.

Ponnaiyan, who was badly injured, walked to hospital but fell down on the way in 2 Block, Nakkeeran Salai. He died there due to heavy loss of blood, the police officer added.

A family member told police about the incident, and a team from J J Nagar police station arrived. They recovered Ponnaiyan’s body and sent it for a post-mortem examination., the officer added

Thangaraj was arrested and was sent to Puzhal prison on Friday evening.
