Drug consignment intercepted

June 23, 2011 02:00 am | Updated 02:00 am IST - CHENNAI:

A consignment containing a contraband booked to Malaysia was intercepted by courier authorities, who referred the material to the police for investigation.

According to police sources, two persons came to book the consignment to Kuala Lumpur saying that it contained books. Sensing foul play, the courier employees opened the parcel and inspected the books. They found a white powder concealed between the polythene wrappers of the books.

The accused fled the scene. The parcel was handed over to the Tiruvottiyur police. The firm's branch manager, Kamalakannan, lodged a complaint with the police, sources said.

“We have referred the powder to the Narcotics Control Bureau for analysis. The sender's address has been found to be fake. The mobile number given by the accused has been activated with a false address. A special team has been formed to investigate and apprehend the suspects,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Tiruvottiyur) G. Shankaralingam said.

NCB's South Zonal Director S. Davidson Devasirvatham said the powder appeared to be either ketamine or ephedrine.
