Even as Chennai Metrowater holds special camps to provide house service connections, residents of some parts of Ambattur zone are complaining about a long-pending project to provide underground drainage.

Members of the JAMBA United Welfare Association, a conglomeration of associations of six areas, noted that it has been over five years since the project was started in Mogappair West. However, several houses are still waiting for connections as about 10 % of the work was still pending.

Residents said work had been completed in other parts of the Ambattur zone. Some of the areas where the project has been completed are Oragadam, Banu Nagar, Vijayalakshmipuram, Lenin Nagar and Ram Nagar.

S. Swaminathan, the association’s secretary said residents continue to spend about ₹2,500 towards cleaning septic tanks every month.

About 1,500 houses in areas such as Jaswanth Nagar, Meenakshi Avenue and Baba Nagar still lack drainage networks. Pipelines are yet to be linked with a sewage pumping station on Bharathi Salai.

They also complained that they were already paying sewerage charges, along with water charges, even though connections were yet to be provided. Residents of Madhanangkuppam complained that their area had been completely left out in the scheme.

Chennai Metrowater sources said tenders had been called for completing the pending work and house service connections would soon be provided to those not yet covered.
