February 09, 2014 01:38 am | Updated May 18, 2016 07:00 am IST - CHENNAI:

Widening of phase II of Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) is now a step closer with the consultant submitting the detailed project report to the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company.

When ready, the road will be a six-lane stretch between Siruseri and Poonjeri, and will connect with the East Coast Road.

Two bypasses

The road, which is with the State Highways Department, is currently a four-lane facility with a median. It will have two bypasses at Kelambakkam and Thiruporur.

A 4.67-km bypass will run from Padur to Thaiyyur-B village and will bypass Kelambakkam. The other one, 5.75-km, will run from Kalavakkam to Vengaleri.

Widening of this 26.8-km road is likely to cost around Rs. 550 crore.

The report is presently under scrutiny. Designs of bridges, culverts and other structures are being vetted by experts.

The report will soon be submitted to the State government for its approval, said a source.
