The two men who, based on CCTV footage, were suspected to have been involved in the murder of two women at their house in Maduravoyal on Thursday morning, turned out to be labourers who had nothing to do with the killing.
Police now suspect that an acquaintance of Vimala Devi (47), who might have had easy access to her house on Nagendran Street in Karthikeyan Nagar, might have been responsible for the brutal murder of the woman and her daughter Pavithra (22).
Vimala Devi and Pavithra (a BPO employee) were found dead in a pool of blood at their house around 11 a.m. by her husband Samikkannu who had come from his hotel on Mettukkuppam Main Road to check on them when there was no response to his phone calls. Some gold jewellery was missing from the victims’ corpses.
“We suspect an acquaintance of Devi must have entered the house knowing that the mother and daughter were alone. The killer and the victims seemed to have had a conversation before the murder,” said an investigating officer.
Investigators are awaiting the return of Samikkannu and his son Sukumaran from their native village in Sivagangai, where the last rites of Devi and Pavithra were performed, to gather more information on the people known to the family and frequenting the house.
“The men who were seen in the CCTV footage we obtained were labourers involved in mosaic laying work nearby. They seem to be innocent but we will keep track of their activities. We have questioned Pavithra’s co-workers and her brother’s friends but we are yet to find a breakthrough,” the officer added.
Maduravoyal police has registered a case on the double murder and six teams led by DCP (Anna Nagar) S. Xavier Dhanaraj are carrying out a thorough probe.
