“A feeling has set in [among political parties] that money has to be given to voters; otherwise, they may not vote for us,” chief electoral officer Praveen Kumar said at a lecture delivered as part of the ‘National Voters Day’ celebration at Madras Medical College in the city on Wednesday.

“Whatever money they [political parties] give will be exhausted in a few days but your decision can make a difference for five years,” Mr. Praveen Kumar said.

“We have somehow begun to take democracy for granted. The election commission checks the security arrangementsand trains personnel; but everything is a complete waste if you don’t come and vote,” Mr. Praveen Kumar said. Dr. V. Kanagasabai, dean of MMC, said they will soon organise a human chain and debate in order to create awareness about the need to vote.
