If you are willing to part with your children’s gently-used toys, then ‘Toys for Tots’, an initiative by Happy Hands, is for you. As part of this, old toys are being collected with the objective of setting up a toy library for disadvantaged children.
Happy Hands in an organisation working with children in the age group of three to 21 years focussing on their cognitive, creative, social and life-skills development.
Inspired by similar initiatives in other cities, Preethi Chandrasekar, patron of Happy Hands, started the drive. Over 100 toys have been collected so far and the team of volunteers are aiming at collecting another 400. The toys are collected from various localities by volunteers.
“When a child is given a toy, it plays with it for a while and forgets all about it. But when a toy library is set up, it will be a medium for the child to play, learn and socialise on a daily basis,” explains Preeti, who works with a private firm.
The collected toys are cleaned, labelled and segregated based on the age group they are meant for.
Happy Hands plans to set up the library at a development centre in Semmenchery. “This library will be managed by trained staff who would also guide the children. We also plan to conduct various toys-based activities,” she says. Happy Hands hopes to set up the library before the New Year sets in. For details, call 9500002973.
