Gold jewellery weighing about 50 sovereigns and some diamond sets were found missing from the house of Tamil actor Ramya Krishnan in Injambakkam.

The police have detained the actor’s domestic help on suspicion.

The thefts took place at Ms. Krishnan’s residence on Olive Beach Avenue in Injambakkam where she resides with her parents and son. The suspect, Jyothi (25), a native of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, was a domestic help in the actor’s house since the past six years.

Sometime in August, Nithya noticed some jewellery missing from her almirah. She registered a complaint with the Neelankarai police and a probe was pending.

Meanwhile, more of the actor’s jewellery went missing but her family did not suspect Jyothi as they thought her to be honest.

“The actor often travelled on work. While her father took her son for tennis classes, her mother often went out to shop and for other chores. Jyothi was left alone in the house thus giving her enough time to pocket the valuables,” an investigating officer said.

On Monday, after Jyothi left for her native village, Ms. Krishnan’s mother realised that some of her jewellery kept in a shelf was missing. She grew suspicious and questioned Jyothi when she returned on Thursday morning.

She then informed the Neelankarai police who detained Jyothi. When questioned, she confessed to stealing from the actor a number of times over the last six months and taking the loot to her native village.

A police team has headed to Jyothi’s village in Guntur to recover the stolen jewellery, estimated to be worth more than Rs. 5 lakh, a police officer said.
