Doctors should guard against commercialisation and instead, focus on serving society, said K. Chandru, former judge of Madras High Court, on Friday. Mr. Chandru, who inaugurated the three-day annual conference of the Tamilnadu Ophthalmic Association (TNOA), said the “balance is tilting towards business rather than service” and that the situation warranted self-regulation by medical professionals.
Madhivanan Natarajan, president of TNOA, said there was a need for a campaign against needless blindness.
Orthopaedist and former vice-chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University Mayilvahanan Natarajan lauded ophthalmologists as trend setters in the medical profession. Lifetime achievement awards were presented to doctors for their service to the field of ophthalmology.
