The police are scrutinising CCTV footage obtained from the private hospital in R.A. Puram, near which neurosurgeon S.D. Subbiah was attacked on September 14.
According to police sources, the CCTV footage shows Dr. Subbiah entering a toilet and coming out. A man in a white shirt — who was spotted hacking the doctor in the set of CCTV footage obtained from a nearby apartment — is seen tailing him.
“Police teams have gone to Kanyakumari, Nagercoil and Banglore to nab the attackers,” said a source.
Dr. Subbiah, who retired from Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in July this year, was employed as consultant at the private hospital in R.A. Puram. Around 5 p.m. on September 14, the doctor was brutally attacked by two men. The doctor succumbed to his injuries days later.
The police said the two attackers are suspected to have initially planned to murder the doctor in front of his house. They had conducted a recce and realised their task would be made difficult by movement of people.
Meanwhile, the police have taken Boris and Basil, the two men suspected to be involved in the attack, into custody for eight days for interrogation. The duo surrendered at the Egmore Court on September 25. Basil, an advocate, and Boris are the sons of Ponnusamy, Subbiah’s stepbrother. Boris works in the cargo section of an international airlines firm in Bangalore. “It has been very tough to get information from them,” said a senior police officer.
On Saturday, Ponnusamy and his wife Mary Pushpam, the parents of Basil and Boris, surrendered in Coimbatore. They were brought to Chennai on Sunday and shown the CCTV footage, but stated they were unable to identify the assailants. They have been remanded to judicial custody.
