April 20, 2015 10:34 am | Updated 02:50 pm IST

Like decades ago, government jobs, especially in the Indian Railways, continue to lure thousands of youngsters. However, job aspirants often fall prey to conmen who cheat them of their money by promising them employment with the Indian Railways. Find out here the right way to apply for a job with the Railways.

Recruitment for various posts in the Railways is done through the following agencies:

1

Railway recruitment boards (RRBs)

2

Railway recruitment cells (RRCs)

3

Railway protection force (RPF)

Fact files

  • There are 21 RRBs that recruit young men and women for various posts
  • All the vacancies are widely advertised in leading national and local newspapers, including Employment News/Rozgar Samachar
  • The vacancies are also advertised on the official websites of all RRBs and RRCs
  • Announcement regarding vacancy/recruitment from any other source (other than those given above) may be considered fraudulent
  • Before applying to the various posts, candidates should ensure they fulfil the eligibility norms. Candidates must possess the requisite educational and technical qualifications from recognised institutions

Examination

  • The exam process includes a written test. The answer sheets are evaluated on computers
  • The exam fee is Rs. 100

Results

  • Results of the exams are published on the official websites of RRBs and RRCs
  • However, selection by RRB does not mean right of appointment in the Railways. The function of RRB is to recommend names of suitable candidates to the respective railway zones
  • Zonal officers, in turn, send appointment letter, subject to availability of vacancies, to candidates who are medically fit and satisfy all eligibility criteria

Expert Speak

Youngsters interested in a Railways job must read newspapers regularly for vacancy advertisements. But the government should consider easing the cumbersome process of applying for railway jobs. If the paperwork is reduced, it will eliminate the role of touts to a great extent – L. Manikandan, member, Indian Railway Fan Club
