DMK’s organisation secretary R.S. Bharathi and spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan are the party’s candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections from Tamil Nadu.
The announcement came immediately after AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik, who is in charge of party affairs in Tamil Nadu, and TNCC president E.V.K.S. Elangovan called on DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Saturday.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi also spoke to Mr. Karunanidhi over phone.
To win a seat from Tamil Nadu, a candidate needs 34 votes, and given its strength in the Assembly, the DMK is sure to win the two seats. It has 89 members, while the Congress has eight and Indian Union Muslim League one.
With 134 members, the AIADMK is poised to take the other four seats.
Six seats will fall vacant in June due to the expiry of the terms of K.P. Ramalingam and S. Thangavelu (DMK), A. Navaneethakrishnan, Paul Manoj Pandian and A. William Rabi Bernard (AIADMK) and E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan (Congress).
