The DMK on Monday held a public meeting at Koyambedu here to celebrate the party chief M.Karunanidhi’s birthday after the Madras High Court granted permission for the meeting to be held till 10.30 p.m.

A Division Bench comprising Justices R.Subbiah and M.Sathyanarayanan passed the order on an appeal by a DMK functionary challenging a single Judge’s order.

Initially, K. Dhanasekaran of K.K.Nagar here, a divisional secretary, filed an application seeking police permission and protection for holding the public meeting at the Koyambedu market place. By an order dated June 16, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Koyambedu, rejected permission. Mr.Dhanasekaran filed a petition before the High Court and a single Judge dismissed the plea.

Aggrieved, the petitioner filed an appeal before the Bench which ordered that the meeting could be held till 10.30 p.m.
