AIADMK councillors roughed up DMK councillors at the Chennai Corporation council meeting on Tuesday.

The incident was in response to the opposition by DMK councillors Subhash Chandra Bose and Deva Jawahar to a remark by Mayor Saidai Duraisamy pertaining to former Chief Minister Karunanidhi.

The Mayor said the disproportionate assets case was crafted by DMK leader M. Karunanidhi.

“People have started to rise in protest against the persons responsible for the politically-motivated steps taken by Karunanidhi in 1996. Our Amma generated wealth in an ethical manner by acting in at least 150 movies. Our Amma has been punished without her committing any wrong,” said the Mayor.

When DMK councillors Mr. Bose and Mr. Jawahar interrupted the Mayor’s speech, AIADMK councillors roughed them up, forcing them to leave the council hall.

However, Mr. Bose remained the focus of aggression of the AIADMK councillors while other DMK councillors left the council hall in a hurry.

The AIADMK councillors continued to attack the DMK councillors until they left the council hall. at Ripon Buildings.

Later, the DMK councillors were forced to remain out of the council hall by a group of agitated AIADMK councillors.

DMK councillor Mr. Jawahar said he was attacked by persons who were not councillors. “I sustained minor injuries in the neck. They punched me in the face too,” he said.

No police complaint was filed.
