The Tamil Nadu Udavikaram Association for the Welfare of Differently Abled has urged Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to appoint members to the Tamil Nadu Welfare Board for the Differently Abled to make it functional. Similarly, it also demanded the constitution of district-level committees under the Collectors.

In order to implement the rights and welfare measures of the differently-abled, State co-ordination committee and State executive committee should be constituted as per Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995.

The association demanded a hike in the special assistance from Rs.1,000 to Rs.3,000 per month and to disburse the amount through banks every month.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko said: “The welfare board was non-functional in the previous government’s period. It continues to be so. The members should be appointed immediately to the board.”Mr. Vaiko also said three per cent reservation to this section in government remained a mirage.

In a statement, Ms. Jayalalithaa extended her greetings to the differently abled on the eve of International Day of People with Disability. She said the government was a pioneer in implementing welfare measures for them by reserving three per cent in Green House project.
