The Central Crime Branch of the city police on Friday registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust against leading Tamil director-producer Gautham Vasudev Menon following a complaint lodged by a film producer from T. Nagar.

According to police sources, the complainant, R. Jayaraman of R.S. Infotainment, lodged a complaint in April 2013 against the director and his associates, Ramanujam, Sasikaladevi, Venkatasomasundaram and Reshma Ghatala who are part of his production company, Photon Kathas, on charges of cheating him to the tune of Rs. 1.98 crore.

The director and his associates had reportedly obtained the sum from a Mumbai-based production company following the release of Menon’s Hindi remake of the movie ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa’ and failed to give Jayaraman his share of the profit as per a contract signed earlier.

Following a court direction, the CCB registered a case against Gautham Menon and four others on Friday evening and further probe is under way, sources added.
