Dip in mercury level likely today

May 09, 2014 09:09 am | Updated 02:25 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Residents of Chennai may enjoy the dip in mercury level during this peak summer-time for one or two more days.

Some areas may experience thundershowers on Friday under the impact of the well-marked low pressure area. According to the meteorological department, the low pressure area that lies over south east Arabian Sea off the north Kerala coast is likely to move northeastwards.

While it is expected to bring heavy rainfall to interior districts in the State, Chennai may have to make do with a drop in the day temperature and light showers.

While it rained overnight in various parts of the city and the peripheral areas, there was no rain on Thursday, much to the disappointment of residents who expected some respite from the fast-depleting groundwater levels.

On Thursday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 33.7 degree Celsius and 34 degree Celsius, three degrees lower than the average temperature. The department forecasts that the maximum temperature will be around 34 degree Celsius on Friday and the rainfall over the State will decrease gradually.
