The project aims to connect all the Government Railway Police stations and their supervisory offices across the country to enable sharing of information about crimes and criminals.
Earlier, if the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Chennai needed some details about a suspect based out of Kanyakumari, an official had to go there or make countless calls. Now, this information will be available at the click of a mouse.
This will be one of the benefits of the crime and criminal tracking network and systems (CCTNS) project for the GRP that was launched at Chennai Central railway station on Monday by Additional Director General of Police (Railways) R. Sekar.
The project aims to connect all the police stations and their supervisory offices across the country to enable sharing of information about crimes and criminals.
This system helps the police in registering FIRs and case details digitally and sending information to State Data Centre (SDC) for storage and retrieval. Citizen services, like providing information or applying for licences, are an important component of the project.
“Besides, the project will help elimination of duplicate and inconsistent record keeping. It will also reduce work load and time in gathering information on investigation between districts,” said Mr. Sekar.
The project covers 33 GRP police stations in the State. 130 computers have been provided. “A total of 10 years’ data have been digitized and uploaded. The facility to view the progress of the petition by the petitioner is also available,” said Mr. Sekar.
